We have all been on wellness journeys since the day we were born and yet defining wellness can be tricky.
Especially with all the information out there that may or may not even be true.
So what the heck does wellness even mean?
How My Wellness Journey Started
Before we discuss what wellness means, I need to tell you about why wellness matters so much to me.
For starters, my goal with this blog is to share with you not only the lessons I have learned on my journey, but also the tips and strategies I have learned as a holistic health coach
Through my coaching program and through helping my clients on their journeys, I have learned that Wellness is NOT a one-size fits all definition.
So, let's go back in time for a moment and let me tell you about becoming a wellness coach.
My journey has had its ups and downs for sure.
I didn’t focus on my wellness, let alone pay attention to it until my 40s when I became a distance runner and fell in love with running.
Naturally, I started looking at trying to eat better to fuel my runs and transform my routines like heading to bed earlier to rest up for my long runs on the weekend.
Over time I started to see improvements in my wellness: my clothes fit more comfortably AND I felt more confident.
Yet I was still struggling with digestive issues daily, I had more weight to lose, and I had a wicked caffeine habit just to get through the day.
I was pretty certain that I should be feeling better than I did but I didn’t want to go on yet another diet. I knew something wasn’t working, so I wondered what to do next.
It’s OK To Seek Help
When I wasn’t feeling any better and facing the dilemma of another diet that I knew wouldn’t work, that is when I met a health coach in a local running group I belonged to.
I started implementing some of the tips she shared and then signed up for one of her programs. I had nothing to lose.
And WOW! The changes I experienced were amazing!
I learned so much from her.
And I loved the transformation that I had experienced so much that I decided to take the leap and become a certified health coach myself.
Everything I had been working towards since I started running worked up to this moment when Colleen Cleary Wellness was born.

Colleen Cleary Wellness: Origin Story
When I first graduated from my health coach program, I did the thing they told us not to do.
I said I would help anyone and everyone that wanted a coach.
I had clients working on getting off their chronic disease medications, clients wanting to become faster runners, moms trying to level up their wellness not just for themselves but their entire families, men who had lost weight only to regain it, and grandmothers who were burned out by taking care of everyone else.
Just typing that out was exhausting.
Anyways, in the program they told us to get focused on a specific type of client we wanted to work with.
So, I told myself, “yeah but lots of people need a better night's sleep, more green veggies and to drink more water” and I continued to invite anyone and everyone into my coaching programs.
As time went on I discovered a pattern.
I would meet with a client, and at the end of each session we would discuss what they would focus on for the week ahead.
More often than not they would come back having started with the best intentions but end up watching the wheels come off at some point.
It happens to all of us.
Now, at this time I was intensely training for distance races, starting with half marathons before deciding to embrace a full 26.2 mile marathon.
See, when I have a goal like that - I am dedicated to showing up every day. Period.
So, why was I able to stick to that but my clients were struggling?
That’s when my second round of education started.
I took a deep dive on how to hack your mindset, how to create a habit and make it stick and went all in on discovering why we self-sabotage and what to do about it.
Let’s face it. At the end of the day, we can have all the information about what we need to do and still not show up unless we work on our mindset and old patterns of self-sabotage.
So, What Does Wellness Even Mean?
For me, I define wellness as a blend of actively pursuing knowledge about what works for you as an individual, the confidence that comes with that knowledge, and the commitment to showing up consistently for yourself in a holistic way.
All of this together means you can lead a life you desire with energy, strength and vitality.
And that is what I have built The Cleary Method around - knowledge and commitment.
Because wellness is all about showing up for yourself in the best way possible.
Introducing: The Cleary Method
With ALL of this new information, The Cleary Method (mindset | habits | nutrition) was born.
I can say for certain, there are two things that contribute to your success:
Understanding what works for you despite all the overwhelming info you get flooded with daily. AND
Learning how to show up for yourself consistently vs. the starting/stopping cycle you’ve been on. In other words, getting out of your own way.
And with my help, we will sort through the chaos and the overwhelm while figuring out what it looks like to show up consistently in your everyday life so you can live your best life.
